Constructing Care:
Envisioning Architecture of Measured Distances and Calibrated Pace
The architecture of care emerges through an acute understanding of two fundamental tenets: distance and pace. Distance, in this regard, is not merely a spatial measurement but an existential calibration—a strategic negotiation between individuals and the natural environment that architecture perpetually mediates. When architecture thoughtfully establishes spatial boundaries, it does more than conserve resources or reduce environmental impact; it choreographs human proximity, crafting spaces that impart lasting satisfaction through their attunement to life’s essential rhythms.

Pace, on the other hand, addresses architecture’s latent role as a moderator of temporal flow within the built environment. A well-tempered pace reframes the velocity of daily events, preventing the collision of excess and inertia alike. Here, architecture becomes an instrument of measured cadence, mitigating disruptions and proposing new modalities of engagement. By attuning itself to the speed of its inhabitants—whether individuals or objects—architecture functions as a steadfast custodian of spatial coherence, anchoring moments of stillness and dynamism alike. 

In this framework, careful-ness transcends aesthetic or functional concerns; it repositions design as a practice deeply embedded in sustaining meaningful spatial relationships. Through the dual lenses of distance and pace, architecture fosters spaces that respect the intricacies of human life while maintaining a conscientious connection to the environment.

Principal architect and visionary behind LKJAP.
Rooted in a commitment to quality of life and communal resilience, his projects blend contextual sensitivity with clarity of purpose, aiming to foster environments that resonate both functionally and socially. His recognized public projects include the Seoul Metro Jong-gak Station Extension and the Seoul National University Institute of Advanced Machines and Design, alongside numerous honors, including the TSK Fellowship Award.

His educational background reflects a deep engagement with architecture’s potential to shape meaningful interactions. After completing his B.S. in Architectural Engineering at Seoul National University, he pursued his M.Arch at the Yale School of Architecture, where his work with Frank O. Gehry and Peter Eisenman in Advanced Studios sharpened his perspective on design as a discipline grounded in both rigor and adaptability. His practice exemplifies this philosophy, crafting architecture that remains sensitive to both present needs and future possibilities.

In his role as an educator at Seoul National University and Hongik University, he teaches Algorithm-Driven Digital Fabrication Design and Advanced Design Studios, cultivating an environment where students probe the intersections of digital technology, design theory, and spatial experience. His teaching underscores a belief that architecture thrives at the intersection of innovative methodologies and human-centered thinking—a reflection of his commitment to fostering the next generation of architects.

Further extending his engagement with interdisciplinary collaboration, he is actively involved in research with the Seoul National University Hospital’s Department of Medicine & Advanced Technology. 상생의 건축을 일생 고민해오신 야마모토 리켄 선생님의 서울대 설계스튜디오 오픈크리틱과 특강에 초청 받아 다녀왔습니다. 마침 프리츠커 재단에서 올해 수상 영예를 안으신 선생에게 보낸 비공개 축하영상을 보내와 갑절로 귀한 시간이 되었습니다. 

현대인의 삶이 계약과 돈에 묶여 신뢰와 자치가 주는 건강함을 모두 잃었으니, 건축가의 소명은 인간 본연의 사회성을 끄집어 내는 것이라는 말씀이 와닿았습니다.

보수화된 일본에서 수용 불가능한 주거 타입이 오히려 커뮤니티가 가장 빠르게 붕괴된 한국에서 실현되었다는 점, 그 공로는 다시 한번 해외 건축가가 가져가고 국내 건축가들은 하염없이 축하해주는 풍경이 묘한 여운으로 남는 강연이었습니다.

2024 Pritzker Prize Laureate Yamamoto Riken SNU Lecture [Living Together] Live Stream︎︎︎


I had the honor of attending an open critique and lecture at Seoul National University, given by Professor Riken Yamamoto, a visionary architect who has long explored and implemented symbiotic architecture.

His words resonated deeply when he spoke about how modern life, bound by contracts and money, has lost the healthiness that trust and autonomy provide. According to him, the architect’s mission is to draw out humanity’s innate sense of social connection.

What struck me further was the realization that a residential type, deemed unacceptable in conservative Japan, was actually realized in Korea—a country where communities have disintegrated at an alarming rate. Yet, the credit once again goes to a foreign architect, while Korean architects, struggling even to find footing, are left to applaud from the sidelines. The lecture left me with a lingering sense of melancholy as I reflected on this poignant reality.

전시소개
전시는 코엑스 동문(East Gate) 로비에서 10시부터 18시까지 무료로 관람 가능하며, 전시와 연계된 다양한 무료 참여 프로그램이 진행됩니다. 28일과 29일에는 건축사 4인의 강연과 어린이 및 청소년을 대상으로 한 실크스크린 체험 프로그램을 운영하고, 전시가 종료된 후 10월 초에는 버스와 도보로 수상작 3~4개 건물을 방문하는 투어 프로그램과 수상작 설계사무소 견학 프로그램이 이어질 예정입니다.

I spoke about realtime remodeling issues in architecture at the Beautiful Architecture Exhibition, hosted by Gangnam District and the Gangnam Architects Association, taking place at COEX.

 Speach Summary 
As Seoul steps into an era of slow growth and tangled urban turf wars, the focus is shifting from creating the new to reimagining the old. Remodeling has emerged as the prevailing trend, offering a practical and strategic path to enhancing property value. I delve into the purpose, various remodeling types, and the pressing real-time issues facing architectural renovations aimed at boosting value for both current and future property owners.

 Exhibition Details 
The exhibition is open to the public for free from 10 AM to 6 PM. Additionally, various free participation programs related to the exhibition will be available. On the 28th and 29th, there will be lectures by four architects, as well as a silk-screen printing experience program for children and teenagers. Following the exhibition, in early October, there will be a tour program visiting 3 to 4 award-winning buildings by bus and on foot, along with a tour of the winning architecture firms.

서울대평생교육원 전공탐구 프로그램 진행

서울대학교 평생교육원과 중구청이 주관하고 중구 고교생이 참여하는 대학전공 심화탐구 건축전공의 강연을 맡아 사흘간 프로그램을 진행하였습니다.  드로잉과 상상, 재료와 구축, 설계와 소통이라는 주제로 사흘간 이론강의와 실습과제를 병행했고, 생소한 분야임에도 학생들의 뜨거운 관심과 놀라운 집중력으로 프로그램은 성황속에 마쳤습니다.

I enjoyed leading a three-day workshop for high school students from Jung-gu, hosted by Seoul National University’s Lifelong Education Institute and Jung-gu District Office. Under the themes of Drawing and Imagination, Materials and Construction, and Design and Communication, the program blended theory with hands-on projects, allowing students to immerse themselves in the world of architecture. Despite it being an unfamiliar field for many, the students’ incredible enthusiasm and focus made the program a great success.

대학전공 심화탐구 개요/
2024 서울대-중구청 대학연계 진로심화프로그램 운영 사업 ‘대학전공 심화탐구 프로그램’:
서울대학교 평생교육원은 2022년부터 서울시 중구청과 협력하여 관내 중고등학생들을 위한 교육협력 사업을 진행하고 있습니다. 해당 사업의 일환으로 관내 고등학생들을 대상으로 하는 '대학전공 심화탐구 프로그램'을 기획하였으며, 고등학교 학생들이 관심 있는 대학 전공 수업을 미리 체험해보며, 미래 진로와 대학 진학에 대한 꿈을 키워나갈 수 있도록 돕는 취지입니다.

1. 수업 대상: 서울시 중구 소재 고등학교 1, 2학년 학생 14명 내외(행사 불참자(고등학생) 발생 시 조금 더 줄어들 수 있습니다.) - 건축학, 건축환경 분야로 대학 진학을 희망하는 학생들이 참여

Overview of the 2024 SNU-Jung-gu Collaborative Career Exploration Program: Deep Dive into University Majors  
Since 2022, Seoul National University’s Lifelong Education Institute has been collaborating with Jung-gu District Office to offer educational partnership programs for local middle and high school students. As part of this initiative, we launched the University Major Exploration Program, designed to give high school students the chance to experience university-level courses in their fields of interest, helping them cultivate dreams of future careers and higher education.

서울건축산업연구원 5기 선임연구위원으로 위촉되어 그동안 관전만 하던 건축제도와 업무환경 개선에 직접 참여하게 되었습니다.  다음은 건축사신문 해당내용 전문입니다.

서울특별시건축사회는 6월 21일 회의실에서 제5기 서울건축산업연구원 발대식을 진행했다. 발대식에서는 이광환 연구원장(주. 해안종합건축사사무소)과 연구위원, 자문위원들에게 위촉장이 수여됐다. 서울건축산업연구원은 건축 관련 정책과 제도 개선을 통해 건축사 권익 향상 및 건축문화 창달에 기여하고 있으며 지난 2013년 설립해 오늘에 이르고 있다. 그동안 연구원은 건축공사감리의 공공성 확보, 해체공사 감리업무 매뉴얼, 외벽 석재 마감재의 탈락에 대한 연구 등 다수의 연구성과를 창출한 바 있다.

I have been appointed as a Senior Research Fellow in the 5th term of the Seoul Institute of Architectural Industry, allowing me to directly participate in improving the architectural systems and work environments I had previously only observed from the sidelines. Below is the full article from the Architects' Newspaper regarding the appointment.

On June 21, the Seoul Institute of Architects held the inauguration ceremony for the 5th term of the Seoul Institute of Architectural Industry in its conference room. During the ceremony, certificates of appointment were presented to Research Director Kwang-Hwan Lee (Haeahn Architecture Co., Ltd.), research fellows, and advisory members. Since its establishment in 2013, the Seoul Institute of Architectural Industry has contributed to the advancement of architectural culture and the enhancement of architects' rights by improving architecture-related policies and systems. Over the years, the institute has produced numerous research achievements, including securing public responsibility in architectural supervision, developing a manual for demolition supervision, and researching the falling of exterior stone finishes.

건축가 김수근이 70년대에 설계한 서울대학교 음악대학 54/55동의 보존형 리모델링 설계공모안이 4위로 선정되었습니다.  김수근 건축의 바탕을 보존하고 악기의 물성과 연주자의 행동특성을 중심으로 동선, 공간, 설비, 마감을 재구성한 점이 좋은 평가를 받았습니다.

Our design proposal for the conservation-minded remodeling of Buildings 54/55 at Seoul National University's College of Music, originally designed by architect Kim Swoo-geun in the 1970s, was ranked fourth in a recent competition. Our take was recognised for its reading of Kim's architectural legacy and its cohesive reconfiguration of circulation, spaces, facilities, and finishes. Central to its accolades was the attention to the physical properties of musical instruments and the specific movements of musicians.

SNU Graduate School of Public Health Extension - 4th Place

서울대학교 보건대학원 22동 증축을 위한 설계공모안이 4위로 선정되었습니다.  수직패턴의 입면요소를 반복 배치해 오디토리움과 야외라운지의 간결한 위요를 만들어내었다는 평가를 받았습니다. 보행장애인을 배려하느라 토목공사비용 상승요인을 만든 것이 문제로 지적되었는데, 여전히 공사비를 이길  설계명목을 찾는 일은 어렵게 느껴집니다.

Our design proposal for the expansion of Building 22 at Seoul National University's Graduate School of Public Health was ranked fourth in a recent competition. The design received mention for its use of repetitive vertical facade elements that created a streamlined connection between the auditorium and an outdoor lounge. However, it faced criticism for it’s chance of increased land cut & fill costs due to accommodations made for individuals with mobility impairments.

Invited Juror for Design Competition - Physics Dept. Extension at Seoul National University

서울대학교 물리천문학부 - 56동, 김철수교수 기념관 증축설계 심사위원으로 초대 받아 25~26일 양일간 참여했습니다. 높은 수준의 제출작을 보며 연신 경외와 숙연함을 느꼈습니다.  숙고 끝에 선정된 당선안이 서울대 캠퍼스에 원안대로  잘 안착하길 기대합니다.

I was honored to serve as a jury member for the design competition in expanding Building 56, the Kim Cheol-su Memorial Hall, at Seoul National University's Department of Physics and Astronomy. The review took place over two days, on the 25th and 26th. I was totally struck by the high caliber of submissions, which inspired both awe and empathy. After careful consideration, the winning proposal was selected, and I eagerly anticipate its successful integration into the Seoul National University campus as originally envisioned.

문래동 거점시설 설계공모

영등포구 도시재생사업부가 발주하고 문래동 소공인들이 입주하는 생산, 협업 및 전시홍보 거점시설에 대한 제안입니다. 
소규모 기계공업과 모듈, 스케일 문제에 대한 고민이 치열했던 안으로, ‘가로街路의 스케일을 고려한 격자의 구조가 외벽구성요소와  결합하면서 더블스킨의  효과를 갖도록 하는 방식이 흥미롭다’,  ‘깔끔하게 정리했고 층간 연계성과 평면구성의 유기성 부족은 아쉽다’는 우의정 소장님(메타건축)의 평이 있었습니다.
모듈을 소분해 나가는 과정에서 평면과 입면의 상관관계, 파사드와 파사드 이면의 효용에 대한 여러가지 시뮬레이션을 도출해 본 재미있는 작업이었습니다.

This is a proposal for a production, collaboration, and exhibition-promotion hub in Munrae-dong, commissioned by the Yeongdeungpo-gu Urban Regeneration Office and to be occupied by local artisans. The design, intensely deliberated over issues of small-scale machinery industry, modularity, and scale, suggests a captivating approach: integrating a gridded structure that considers the scale of the street to form an exterior wall system, creating a double-skin effect. Woo Ui-Jeong, director at Meta Architecture, commented on the design, noting, "It's neatly organized, though it lacks some cohesiveness and connectivity between floors and the overall plan configuration." The project involved engaging simulations exploring the relationships between floor plans and facades, as well as the utility behind and beyond the facade, making it an intriguing endeavor.

정밀기계설계공동연구소 - 철골공사

정밀기계설계공동연구소 실험동은 현재 기존부 구조보강과 내부마감 공사를 마치고 증축부의 철골공사가 시작되었습니다.  장마철에 특히 더딜 RC 양생과 달리 순식간에 올라가는 SC 골조의 면모를 실감합니다.
연구소 행정실, 본부 시설과, 시공팀과 설계팀이 모여 외부계단의 진입부 설치, 컬럼이 올라갈 푸팅 설치 위치 및 방법, 구조부재 대체 및 보강방식에 관한 문제 등 여러가지 현황 이슈들을 점검하고 향후 커튼월 목업샘플 제작 문제에 관해 논의하였습니다.

The Experimental Building of the Precision Machinery Design Joint Research Institute has completed the structural reinforcement and interior finishing of the existing parts, and the construction of the steel framework for the extension has begun. Unlike the slow curing of reinforced concrete (RC) during the rainy season, the rapid assembly of the steel construction (SC) framework is impressively swift. Administrative and headquarters staff from the research institute, along with the construction and design teams, convened to review various current issues. These included the installation of the entrance to the external staircase, the placement and methods for the footing where columns will be erected, and alternatives and reinforcements for structural members. Discussions were also held on the future production of curtain wall mockup samples, highlighting a proactive approach to addressing upcoming project needs.

[소개]
‘살과 돌’. 이 전시를 통해 도시에 대한 몸의 경험들이 어떤 변화를 겪고 있는지를 세심하게 살피고, 우리 몸의 도시 경험을 지우거나 증폭하거나 변화시키기 위한 건축적 개입이 어떻게 일어날 수 있을지 디자인상의 해법을 제시하려고 합니다. 어쩌면 건축은 사회변화보다 더디고, 때로는 사회변화를 필요이상 제약하는 상황에 대해서, 예비 건축가들이 제시하는 새로운 ‘살과 돌’의 해법에 대해 주목해주시길 바랍니다.
